Grimes’ breakthrough album Visions is, at its core, very girlish dance pop material, and it’s pretty amazing and effective on that level. Claire Boucher takes it a few steps further by adding so many layers of vocals that it becomes very abstract. Her vocal parts fracture and collide, like contradicting thoughts swirling around in your head. “Circumambient” is especially great because she seems to delight in this indecisive, delirious state, and she makes it feel fun and exciting.
